General Luna’s Valentine’s Day Stress Leave
Valentine’s Day is here and for a lot of us, it’s not exactly a happy occasion. But for the single local government employees in General Luna, Quezon, there are no such worries. With the Araw ng mga Puso coming and going past their lonely single hearts, they are instead in for a restorative treat!
Government’s out-of-the-box move to cheer singles
Guided by an executive order issued by municipal Mayor Erwin Florido, ‘single’ local government staff can apply for a special two-day fully paid leave on February 15 and 16. This quirky move is designed to alleviate the undue stress Valentine’s Day can sometimes add to solo hearts. But that’s not all, employees who decide to work on these days will receive double their daily wages.

With this interesting measure, Florido’s administration aims to address the psychological well-being of employees, giving them the necessary time for self-care and rejuvenation. In a Facebook post on 8 February, he states, “Ilang araw na lang at sasapit na naman ang Valentine’s Day…Sa ating mga single employees, ramdam ko ang inyong pinagdadaanan lalo na at papalapit na ang Araw ng mga Puso. Mahal ko kayong lahat, kaya naman muli nating inihahandog ang espesyal na pribiliheyo upang mag-enjoy naman kayo ngayong darating na Valentine’s.”
In line with Republic Act No. 11058, or the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Act, the initiative highlights the importance of the well-being of workers.
For the leave application’s validation, the local government unit’s Human Resources office, together with a specialized verification committee, will conduct a confidential investigation to substantiate the single status of the applicants.

What’s the catch? Absolutely none! The special stress leave won’t be charged to government coffers, as Florido has pledged to personally cover the cost. Single and still working? Well, we already said it: you get double the pay!
This isn’t a random display of Valentine’s Day spirit. Florido has been spreading love this way since 2022.
