Geena Rocero in Glamour’s Women of the Year 2023
Time and time again, Filipinos bring our country pride anywhere they are in the world – from their work in healthcare to their achievements in the arts.
On 17th October 2023, Filipina supermodel Geena Rocero was named one of the winners of Glamour’s Women of the Year Award. However, her win was met with polarizing opinions on social media.
Who is Geena Rocero?

Geena Rocero is a US-based Filipino supermodel. In 2020, she made history as the first trans woman to be part of the Playboy Playmates of the Year.
Beyond modeling, Rocero is an advocate for transgender rights. In 2014, she established Gender Proud, a media production company dedicated to highlighting transgender stories and experiences.
Recently, Rocero also published her first book, Horse Barbie. It’s an autobiography where she shares her journey as a trans woman in both the Philippines and in the US.
Social media outrage from conservatives

However, Rocero winning the title was met with outrage on social media. Conservatives left tweets and replies on Rocero’s Instagram posts saying the award was given to a man.
Amidst the controversy, Rocero also received an outpour of supportive comments on her Instagram, with many congratulating her on this significant achievement.
Besides Rocero, 6 other women also received the award. Among them are America Ferrera, Quinta Brunson, and Millie Bobby Brown.
Filipina wins Glamour’s Women of the Year Award
